Course Overview:-

  • Focus: Training in diagnostic imaging techniques and operating equipment for medical diagnosis
  • Key subjects: Human anatomy, radiology physics, imaging modalities (X-ray, CT, MRI, Ultrasound), radiation safety, and patient care
  • Practical experience: Includes hands-on training in hospital settings, learning about patient positioning, contrast media techniques, and infection control. Students interested in patient care and support roles can also explore the General Duty Assistant Course

Course Responsibilities:-

Patient Care:

Explain procedures and safety measures to patients.Position patients correctly for imaging procedures. Ensure patient comfort and alleviate concerns. Practical patient assistance skills are also emphasized in the nursing assistant cours

Equipment Operation:

Operate sophisticated imaging equipment, such as X-ray, CT, and MRI machines, based on radiologist instructions.Adjust machine settings to optimize image quality.

Safety and Compliance:

Adhere to radiation safety protocols to minimize exposure for themselves, patients, and coworkers.Handle emergency situations and their remedies within the radiology department.

Image Quality and Analysis:

Produce high-quality diagnostic images essential for diagnosis and treatment planning. Monitor and maintain imaging equipment to ensure it is functioning correctly and safely.

Record Keeping:

Maintain accurate and detailed patient records, including procedure type and radiation dose.

Collaboration:

Work closely with radiologists, doctors, and other medical professionals to discuss procedures and results.

 Course Curriculum Components:-

Core theoretical components:

  • Anatomy and Physiology: In-depth study of the human body's structure and function, often with a focus on how it relates to imaging.
  • Radiation Physics: Principles of radiation, its production, and its interaction with matter.
  • Radiographic Techniques: The science of performing a wide range of radiographic procedures and positioning.
  • Radiation Protection and Safety: Measures to minimize radiation exposure to both the patient and the technologist.
  • Medical Imaging Equipment: Operation, maintenance, and quality control of equipment like X-ray machines, CT scanners, and MRI machines. For students interested in lab and diagnostic work, see the phlebotomy technician course
  • Patient Care and Management: Principles of patient communication, handling medical emergencies, and care during imaging procedures.

Practical and hands-on components:

  • Darkroom and Processing Techniques: Learning the procedures for developing and processing traditional film or digital images.
  • Equipment Operation and Calibration: Gaining practical experience with diagnostic equipment and ensuring proper calibration.
  • Image Quality Assessment: Learning to evaluate and improve the quality of radiographic images.
  • Clinical Internship: Rotations in a hospital or clinic's radiology department to gain real-world experience with patients and procedures.

Potential elective and advanced topics:

  • Computed Tomography (CT): Advanced imaging techniques using CT scanners.
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): Principles and practice of MRI.
  • Mammography: Specialized techniques for breast imaging.
  • Ultrasound: Principles of diagnostic ultrasound.
  • Nuclear Medicine: Basic principles of using radioactive tracers for diagnosis.
  • Interventional Radiography: Procedures that use imaging guidance for minimally invasive treatments.

Job Opportunities: Job Positions as an X-ray Technician, MRI Technologist, CT Scan Technologist, and Ultrasound Technician. Graduates can also find roles such as a Radiology Assistant, Imaging Technologist, or work in diagnostic labs and hospitals. Students seeking broader healthcare roles may also consider the medical lab technician course
