Course Overview:

            Phlebotomy Technician also known as a Phlebotomist can assist a Medical Laboratory Technician, pathologists, help doctors or medical practitioners, health care providers and also work as a Lab Assistant, Mobile Phlebotomist, Clinical Assistant, Medical Assistant, Hematology Technician, etc. They can work with nurses, physicians, EMTs and even surgeons also. Thus they may become a KEY part of the Health Care System. The training provided in this course is useful for careers in hospitals and Health Department Course related healthcare services.

Course Responsibilities:-

  • Patient interaction: Explaining blood draw procedures, verifying patient identity, and comforting patients who may be nervous.
  • Blood collection: Performing venipuncture and other blood collection procedures accurately and safely.
  • Specimen handling: Correctly labeling all specimens immediately after collection and preparing them for lab testing.
  • Patient data management: Recording blood collection procedures, updating patient records in electronic health systems, and completing required paperwork.
  • Workplace and equipment: Maintaining a clean, sterile, and organized workspace and sterilizing equipment after use.
  • Safety and compliance: Adhering to all safety protocols and infection control measures, including OSHA regulations.
  • Vital signs: Taking and recording patient vital signs, such as blood pressure, pulse, and respiration. 

Course Curriculum Components:

The key components of the curriculum are:

  • Introduction to Phlebotomy and Healthcare: Covers the history of phlebotomy, the role and responsibilities of a phlebotomy technician within the healthcare system, and professional conduct and ethics.
  • Anatomy and Physiology: Focuses on the structure and function of the human body, with a specific emphasis on the circulatory and vascular systems to identify appropriate venipuncture sites.
  • Medical Terminology: Teaches the common prefixes, suffixes, root words, and abbreviations used in medical records and laboratory request forms.
  • Infection Control and Safety: Emphasizes strict adherence to standard precautions, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), aseptic techniques, biohazard waste management, and the handling of blood borne pathogens.
  • Phlebotomy Equipment and Supplies: Provides knowledge on identifying and using various equipment, including needles (multi-sample, butterfly, syringes), evacuated tubes (by color code and additives), lancets, and tourniquets.
  • Blood Collection Procedures: Special procedures like blood cultures, glucose testing, and therapeutic drug monitoring.
    Practical knowledge of collecting and handling medical samples is also taught in the Sample Collection Course.:
    • Venipuncture (routine blood draw)
    • Capillary puncture (finger sticks and heel sticks for infants)
    • Special procedures like blood cultures, glucose testing, and therapeutic drug monitoring
  • Specimen Handling and Transport: Instructs on proper labeling, handling, storage, and transportation of blood and other specimens (urine, stool, sputum, etc.) to maintain their integrity and ensure accurate test results.
  • Patient Care and Communication: Focuses on effective communication, patient identification, obtaining consent, comforting anxious patients, and managing patient reactions or complications during the procedure.
  • Legal and Ethical Issues: Covers patient rights, confidentiality (HIPAA regulations), and the legal implications of the work environment, including proper documentation and incident reporting.
  • Quality Assurance: Teaches the principles of monitoring and assuring quality in the collection process to reduce pre-analytical errors.
  • Practical Training/Clinical Externship: A significant hands-on component where students perform a required number of successful venipunctures and capillary collections on living individuals under supervision in a clinical setting (hospital, lab, clinic).

Job opportunities: General Duty Assistant, nursing aide or medical assistant in hospitals, clinics, and nursing homes, with potential for career growth into roles like supervisor or manager.
