Course Overview:

       These programs can be short-term (a few months) or longer (up to a year or more) depending on the institution. Course content often includes topics like geriatric physiology, nursing assistantmedication management, and social and emotional well-being, and many programs include practical, hands-on training. tudents seeking broader healthcare roles may also consider the General Duty Assistant Course

Course Responsibilities:-

Personal and daily care

  • Assisting with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): Helping with bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting.
  • Hygiene and comfort: Ensuring regular personal hygiene, performing bed baths, and preventing issues like bedsores.
  • Mobility assistance: Helping with walking, transferring, and moving around, including the use of mobility aids.
  • Household tasks: Performing light housekeeping duties, laundry, and general tidying of the living space. 

Health and wellness

  • Health monitoring: Tracking vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure) and reporting any changes to healthcare providers.
  • Medication management: Administering medications as prescribed and monitoring for side effects.
  • Dietary support: Planning, preparing, and serving meals according to the individual's dietary needs.
  • First aid: Providing basic first aid in case of emergencies. 

Emotional and social support

  • Companionship: Offering emotional support and social interaction to prevent loneliness and isolation.
  • Counseling: Providing comfort and support, especially for those with mental health challenges like dementia or anxiety.
  • Rehabilitation and exercise: Assisting with prescribed physical therapy exercises, yoga, or other rehabilitation activities. 

Administrative and coordination

  • Care planning: Assisting in the development and following of personalized care plans.
  • Record keeping: Documenting the care provided and maintaining health and medical charts.
  • Communication: Liaising with families, doctors, and other healthcare professionals to ensure continuity of care

 Course Curriculum components:

Foundational Knowledge of Aging

  • Introduction to Gerontology: Understanding the biological, psychological, and social aspects and theories of aging.
  • Anatomy & Physiology: Basic knowledge of the human body and the normal age-related changes occurring in various systems (nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, musculoskeletal, etc.).
  • Common Health Conditions: Knowledge of common diseases and disorders in the elderly, such as dementia, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's disease, diabetes, hypertension, arthritis, and depression. 

Core Caregiving Skills

  • Personal Care and Hygiene: Assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, grooming, oral care, and toileting.
  • Nutrition and Meal Planning: Understanding the nutritional requirements and dietary restrictions for older adults with different medical conditions, and assisting with meal preparation and feeding if needed.
  • Mobility and Physical Assistance: Safe techniques for moving, transferring (e.g., from bed to wheelchair), positioning, and assisting with prescribed exercises or rehabilitation to prevent bedsores or muscle stiffness.
  • Medication Management: Administering medications as per schedule, monitoring for side effects, and maintaining accurate records.
  • Health Monitoring: Measuring and recording vital signs (pulse, blood pressure, temperature, respiration, blood sugar levels) and reporting changes in health status. 

Psychosocial and Communication Support

  • Communication Skills: Effective communication techniques, active listening, and building a therapeutic relationship with the patient and their family members.
  • Emotional and Psychological Support: Providing companionship, reassurance, and empathy, and managing behavioral issues like memory loss, aggression, or anxiety.
  • Counselling Basics: Introduction to basic counseling skills to support older persons dealing with loneliness, loss of a spouse, or depression.
  • Recreational Activities: Planning and organizing social and recreational activities to promote mental and emotional well-being. 

Safety and Management

  • Safety and Environmental Modification: Identifying and mitigating safety hazards in the living environment (e.g., fall prevention), and using assistive devices.
  • Infection Control: Following standard precautions, hand hygiene protocols, and proper biomedical waste management and disposal procedures. For broader healthcare roles, students may also explore the medical lab technician course
  • First Aid and Emergency Protocols: Basic CPR techniques, first aid for common injuries, and handling emergency situations like heart attack or stroke.
  • Ethical and Legal Issues: Understanding the rights of senior citizens, elder abuse, confidentiality, and legal/ethical aspects of professional practice.
  • Home/Facility Management: Basic housekeeping, time management, and organizational skills. 

Practical Training

  • Clinical/On-the-Job Training: Supervised practical experience in real-world settings such as homes, assisted living facilities, or nursing homes to apply theoretical knowledge and skills.
