Sample collection and handling

  • Collect, store, and preserve samples like blood, urine, and tissue.
  • Label and transport samples to the lab for analysis.

Testing and analysis

  • Perform and analyze various diagnostic tests on body fluids and tissues.
  • Use laboratory equipment, such as microscopes and centrifuges, to conduct tests.
  • Match blood samples for transfusions and test blood for drug levels.

Quality control and safety

  • Maintain equipment by cleaning and calibrating it.
  • Implement quality control processes to ensure the accuracy of test results.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and maintain a clean and safe working environment.

  • Keep records of equipment maintenance and daily work logs

 Course Curriculum Components:-

The major subject areas and components typically found in a DMLT program are:

  • Human Anatomy & Physiology: Foundational subjects that cover the structure and function of the human body and its various organ systems (e.g., circulatory, nervous, digestive, excretory).
  • Biochemistry / Clinical Biochemistry: The study of chemical processes in living organisms, focusing on the analysis of bodily fluids (blood, urine, CSF) to measure levels of enzymes, hormones, and other markers for diagnosing metabolic disorders and organ function.
  • Microbiology / Clinical Microbiology: The study of microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites), including their morphology, growth, identification, and their role in infectious diseases. This involves learning culture techniques and antimicrobial susceptibility testing.
  • Pathology / Clinical Pathology: Focuses on the study of diseases, their causes, and how lab tests are used for diagnosis. This includes the examination of surgically removed organs, tissues, and body fluids.
  • Hematology & Blood Banking: The study of blood and blood-forming organs, including blood cell analysis (e.g., CBC, ESR, coagulation tests), diagnosis of blood disorders (anemia, leukemia), blood grouping, cross-matching, and transfusion procedures.
  • Histopathology & Cytopathology: Techniques for preparing, sectioning, and staining tissue and cell samples for microscopic examination, crucial for diagnosing diseases like cancer.
  • Fundamentals of Medical Lab Technology: An introduction to the clinical laboratory environment, including laboratory organization, safety protocols, biomedical waste management, and quality control procedures.
  • Laboratory Instrumentation and Techniques: Training on the operation, maintenance, and principles of various laboratory equipment such as microscopes, centrifuges, spectrophotometers, and automated analyzers.

Practical and Soft Skills Components

In addition to theoretical subjects, the curriculum heavily emphasizes practical application and professional development:

  • Practical Lab Sessions: Extensive hands-on experience in the laboratory performing various diagnostic tests and procedures under supervision.
  • Internships/Clinical Training: Mandatory real-world exposure and practical training in hospital laboratories or diagnostic centers to apply theoretical knowledge in a clinical setting.
  • Communication and Computer Skills: Training in effective communication with healthcare professionals and patients, record-keeping, data management, and the use of laboratory information systems.
  • Medical Ethics: Understanding professional conduct and ethical guidelines related to handling sensitive patient information and samples.
  • Quality Control and Assurance: Learning the protocols to ensure the accuracy, reliability, and quality of laboratory test results.

  • Job opportunities: It including hospitals, diagnostic centers, clinics, and research institutes, with roles such as Medical Lab Technician, Phlebotomist, and Lab Assistant. These positions involve collecting and processing samples, performing routine lab tests, and operating and maintaining laboratory equipment.
