Course Overview:

The standard and more common trade qualification for a fitter is the 1-year ITI Fitter course which includes hands-on and theoretical training in mechanical work, pipe fittings, and machine assembly.

Course responsibilities:-

  • Assembly and installation: Assemble, fit, and install mechanical components, machinery, and equipment according to technical specifications and blueprints.
  • Maintenance and repair: Perform routine maintenance, including lubrication and cleaning, and respond to emergency breakdowns to diagnose and repair faults.
  • Technical interpretation: Read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and blueprints to understand project plans and guide installation and repair work.
  • Tool and equipment operation: Operate and maintain specialized tools, hand tools, and power tools for tasks like cutting, shaping, and fitting materials.
  • Safety compliance: Adhere strictly to safety standards, protocols, and work-site regulations to prevent accidents.
  • Troubleshooting: Diagnose problems with mechanical systems, identify the root cause of malfunctions, and implement effective solutions.
  • Record keeping: Maintain accurate records of all maintenance, repair activities, and inspections.

Additional duties

  • Overhauling: Recondition or overhaul older machines to extend their working life.
  • Teamwork: Collaborate with engineers, technicians, and other crew members to solve mechanical issues and ensure efficient workflow.
  • Inspection: Inspect and test equipment after repair to ensure it is functioning correctly.
  •

Course Curriculum Components:

  • Professional Skill (Trade Practical): Hands-on training to perform various fitting tasks, from basic operations like using chisels and hacksaws to complex processes like fitting components to required tolerances.
  • Professional Knowledge (Trade Theory): Theoretical concepts that support the practical skills, including safety, workshop practices, and the principles behind different fitting operations.
  • Engineering Drawing: Learning to read and create technical drawings, understand the principles of geometry, and apply them to shop floor problems.
  • Workshop Calculation & Science: Topics like measurements, basic mathematics, trigonometry, and understanding concepts like pressure, force, and pneumatics/hydraulics.
  • Employability Skills: Soft skills and professional conduct, including communication, teamwork, and adherence to safety and housekeeping standards.

Practical and project-based components

  • Project Work: Students are assigned projects to build confidence and apply their learned skills in a more comprehensive way.
  • On-the-Job Training (OJT): A key component of the apprenticeship model, allowing students to gain real-world experience in a paid, hands-on environment.
  • Practical Application: Skills are developed by applying cognitive knowledge to tasks, with theory and practice being taught concurrently.

Assessment and evaluation

  • Comprehensive Assessment: Evaluation includes both theoretical and practical components.
  • Performance Criteria: Assessment criteria often reflect the total competencies of the trainee, focusing on aspects like the ability to produce accurate components, perform maintenance, and work safely.

  • Job opportunities: Job roles include Mechanical Fitter, Technician, Service Engineer, and Machine Operator across industries like manufacturing, engineering, and maintenance.
