Course Overview:
Manicurists and pedicurists, sometimes called nail technicians, work exclusively on the hands and feet to groom fingernails and toenails. A typical service involves soaking the clients' hands or feet to soften the skin in order to remove dead skin cells and artificial nails.
Course Responsibilities:-
- Perform manicures and pedicures: This includes cleaning, trimming, filing, and shaping nails on both hands and feet.
- Provide nail treatments: Apply and remove nail polish, gels, and acrylics, and perform other services like nail art, extensions, and repairs.
- Offer hand and foot care: Soften calluses, moisturize skin, and perform massages to improve circulation and client comfort.
- Maintain cleanliness and hygiene: Sterilize all tools and equipment, and keep the workstation clean and sanitary according to health regulations.
Client and business-related duties
- Consult with clients: Discuss services, assess nail and skin conditions, and recommend appropriate treatments or products.
- Provide advice: Educate clients on proper at-home nail and foot care practices.
- Manage appointments: Schedule client appointments and maintain client records.
- Promote and sell products: Recommend and sell nail care products to clients.
Professional development
- Stay current: Keep up-to-date on the latest nail trends, techniques, and products.
- Adhere to safety standards: Follow all health and safety protocols to ensure the well-being of clients and themselves.
Course Curriculum components:
- Manicure Procedures: Detailed instruction on basic and spa manicures, including nail shaping and filing, cuticle care, buffing, and polish application (classic and French).
- Pedicure Procedures: Training in essential and spa pedicures, covering foot soaking, callus removal, exfoliation, nail trimming, and foot massage.
- Nail Extensions and Enhancements: Techniques for applying and maintaining artificial nails, such as acrylics, UV gel, and fiberglass/silk wraps.
- Nail Artistry and Design: Instruction on various creative techniques, including freehand painting, 3D designs, stamping, chrome, ombre, and embellishments.
- Specialized Treatments: Learning about treatments like hot oil manicures, paraffin wax applications, and services tailored for specific clients (e.g., men).
Theoretical Knowledge
- Nail Anatomy and Physiology: Understanding the structure, composition, and growth cycle of nails, as well as the anatomy of the hands and feet.
- Nail Diseases and Disorders: Recognizing common nail and skin conditions (e.g., fungal infections, warts, ingrown nails) to determine when a client should not receive treatment and provide appropriate aftercare advice.
- Product Knowledge and Chemistry: Familiarization with the chemical composition, proper handling, and safe storage of various nail care products, including polishes, adhesives, and chemicals.
Health, Safety, and Professionalism
- Hygiene and Sanitation: Mastering strict sterilization and disinfection protocols for tools, equipment, and work areas to maintain a safe and hygienic salon environment and prevent infections.
- Health and Safety Regulations: Knowledge of relevant laws and safety precautions, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and handling hazardous materials.
- Client Consultation and Communication: Developing strong interpersonal and communication skills for effective client consultation, record-keeping, and addressing client needs and concerns.
- Professional Ethics and Business Skills: Training in professional conduct, salon management, marketing, pricing strategies, and building a client base.

A major component of these diploma programs is hands-on practical training, often involving practice on mannequins and live clients under supervision, to ensure proficiency in all techniques.
