Course Overview:
A career as a Dental Assistant is one of the important roles in the healthcare industry, where teamwork is crucial to the success of medical procedures. As a Dental Assistant, ensuring that all the necessary steps are taken prior to, during and after a dental procedure to guarantee a smooth and successful operation. It is their responsibility to ensure that all the medical equipment are sterilised and are in proper working condition.
Course responsibilities:-
- Assist during procedures: Provide direct support to the dentist or hygienist during dental treatments.
- Prepare patients: Escort patients to the treatment room, go over their medical history, and help ensure their comfort.
- Sterilize and handle instruments: Clean, sterilize, and organize dental instruments and equipment to prevent infection.
- Perform diagnostic tasks: Take and develop dental radiographs (X-rays) and take impressions for dental models.
- Maintain treatment rooms: Prepare the treatment area for patients by making sure everything is ready and clean.
- Educate patients: Provide instructions on oral hygiene, post-treatment care, and preventive measures.
Course Curriculum Components:-
- Anatomy and Physiology: Covers the structure of the mouth, teeth, skull, and oral cavity, along with related nerves, muscles, and blood supply.
- Dental Materials: Focuses on the properties, uses, and manipulation of materials used in dental procedures.
- Infection Control and Sterilization: Teaches proper methods for preventing the spread of infection and maintaining a sterile environment for instruments and the clinical setting.
- Radiography and Imaging: Includes the preparation of equipment, taking dental images, and processing films.
- Patient Care and Communication: Covers the reception of patients, maintaining patient confidentiality, and providing education on oral health.
- Chairside Assisting Techniques: Involves assisting the dentist during various treatments, preparing equipment, and mixing materials.
- Dental Office Management: Includes administrative tasks, managing patient records, and maintaining the overall efficiency of the clinic.
- Preventive Dentistry: Focuses on methods to prevent common oral diseases like dental caries and periodontal diseases.
Additional subjects
- Pathology: Includes both general and oral pathology.
- Pharmacology: Studies the drugs and medicaments used in dental surgery.
- Ethics and Jurisprudence: Covers the ethical and legal aspects of dental practice.
- Emergency Procedures: Addresses how to handle medical and dental emergencies
- Job opportunities: Assistants prepare and organize tools needed by dentists to work on a patient. Dental assistants have many tasks, including patient care, recordkeeping, and appointment scheduling. Their duties vary by state and by the dentists' offices in which they work.
