Course Overview:
Vocational program (often a specialized short-term course or part of a broader diploma in leather technology) focused on developing skills in the precise cutting and pattern making of leather for various goods like footwear, bags, and garments.
Course responsibilities:-
- Material Assessment: Selecting appropriate hides and skins, and visually inspecting them for defects, color matching, and quality.
- Pattern Work: Preparing, positioning, and marking patterns (paper or digital) on the material to minimize waste and ensure accuracy according to design or customer measurements.
- Cutting Operations: Performing precise hand cutting using knives and shears, or operating and tuning various cutting machines such as hydraulic cutting and clicking machines, strap cutters, or automatic laser/knife cutting systems.
- Quality Control: Conducting regular quality checks to ensure cut components meet specifications and identifying and addressing any quality issues, such as misalignments or inconsistent thickness.
- Machine Operation and Maintenance: Identifying different parts of cutting machinery, operating them with the proper sequence, and performing basic maintenance and troubleshooting tasks.
- Safety and Environment: Adhering to health and safety regulations, using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), handling tools and equipment safely, and managing waste responsibly.
- Collaboration: Working with designers, production teams, and quality control inspectors to ensure the final product meets functional and aesthetic requirements.
- Documentation: Maintaining records of cutting activities, material usage, and quality control results.
Course Curriculum Components:
Core Technical Skills
- Leather Types and Characteristics: Understanding various natural (cowhide, buffalo, etc.) and synthetic leathers, their properties, grades, and how to select appropriate material for specific products.
- Pattern Creation and Design: Learning sketching, pattern drafting, grading, and how to transfer patterns onto leather with precision, focusing on minimizing material waste.
- Cutting Techniques: Mastering both hand cutting (using knives, punches, skiving tools) and machine cutting (e.g., hydraulic cutting/clicking machines, strap cutting machines), ensuring accuracy and consistency.
- Tool and Equipment Handling: Proper identification, use, and maintenance of all relevant tools and machinery, including routine maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Quality Control: Inspecting cut pieces, identifying common defects (e.g., misalignment, inconsistent thickness), and implementing corrective measures to ensure the final product meets specifications and quality standards.
- Finishing Techniques (basic): May include basic edge finishing, preparation for stitching, and other related operations.
Foundational and Ancillary Knowledge
- Safety Practices: Comprehensive training on health and safety measures in the workplace, including the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), handling chemicals, fire safety, and maintaining a hazard-free work area.
- Workshop Calculations and Science: Basic mathematics for material costing, production time estimation, and understanding the science behind leather properties and adhesives.
- Employability and Communication Skills: Developing professional skills, effective communication, teamwork, time management, and basic IT literacy.
- Environmental Practices: Awareness of waste management, material optimization, and using eco-friendly processes in production.
Practical Application
- Project Work: Hands-on projects involving the creation of complete leather items like wallets, belts, or handbags to apply learned skills.
- Industrial/Field Exposure: Short-term practical training or internships in actual production units to experience a real job situation.
- Job opportunities: Work including skills for leather cutting, offers diverse opportunities in the growing leather goods, fashion, and automotive industries. Career paths range from technical roles like Production Supervisor and Quality Control Officer to creative roles like Footwear/Accessories Designer.
