Course Overview:
A Diploma in Leather Finishing Operator is a short-term, career-oriented training program that provides essential skills for treating and coating finished leather to achieve specific quality and appearance. The goal is to prepare individuals for immediate work in leather manufacturing.
Course Responsibilities:-
- Operating and maintaining machinery: Use and care for specialized equipment used in leather finishing, such as automatic spraying machines, ironing presses, and embossing machines.
- Applying finishes: Apply a variety of treatments to leather, including creamy, oily, waxy, or plastic-coated finishes, as well as waterproofing, cleaning, and polishing solutions.
- Ensuring quality: Inspect finished products for defects such as wrinkles, stains, and color inconsistencies to ensure they meet quality standards and client specifications.
- Troubleshooting: Identify and resolve minor issues with machinery and the finishing process, or report them to a supervisor if they cannot be solved.
- Following specifications: Adhere to technical sheets and instructions from supervisors to achieve the correct color, texture, and pattern for each product.
- Material handling: Arrange the dosage of finishing mixes and handle materials like metallic hardware, glue, and other accessories.
- Maintaining a safe workspace: Follow safety protocols and keep the work area clean and hazard-free, especially when working with chemicals.
- Record keeping: Maintain accurate records of all finishing processes for quality control and compliance
Course Curriculum Components:
- Leather and Material Science:
- Structure, quality, and characteristics of various hides, skins, and finished leather types (e.g., Nappa, suede, waxy).
- Tanning processes (pre and post-tanning) and the chemical properties of leather.
- Identification and use of substitute materials.
- Finishing Operations:
- Techniques such as dyeing, polishing, edge burnishing, and lacquering.
- Application of waxes, oils, inks, and other auxiliaries.
- Operating specific machines like buffing, auto spray, roller coating, plating, glazing, and embossing machines.
- Troubleshooting and adjusting machine parameters (time, temperature, pressure).
- Production Processes:
- Understanding the sequence of operations in manufacturing (cutting, skiving, stitching, assembling, finishing, packing).
- Methods for optimal material usage and minimizing wastage.
- Quality standards, defect analysis, and quality control protocols.
- Tools and Equipment:
- Identification, operation, and maintenance of both hand tools (knives, punches, hammers) and power-operated machines (stitching, cutting, splitting machines).
Design and Development
- Pattern Making: Sketching designs, creating component patterns, and preparing cutting patterns.
- Market Trends: Knowledge of current fashion trends, customer preferences, and the impact of technology on the industry.
- Design Principles: Introduction to color theory, drawing techniques, and understanding design elements.
Generic and Employability Skills (Core Area)
- Safety and Health:
- General safety knowledge, occupational health and hygiene.
- Proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and fire safety practices.
- Elementary first aid and treatment procedures.
- Communication and Management: Basic communication skills, teamwork, time management, and documentation of technical parameters.
- On-the-Job Training (OJT): Mandatory practical experience in a real workplace setting to develop competency in an actual job situation.
