Course Overview:
It trains individuals to perform precise stitching operations on leather and non-leather components for products like footwear, garments, and accessories. The program focuses on technical skills, machine operation, quality control, and safety protocols within the leather industry.
Course responsibilities:-
Machine Operation and Maintenance
- Operating various machines: Proficiency in using different industrial sewing machines, including flat bed, post bed, and zig-zag machines, to join, reinforce, and decorate leather components.
- Machine setup and adjustment: Setting up the machine for operation, which includes selecting and threading the correct needles and bobbins, adjusting stitch length, speed, and thread tension according to product specifications.
- Routine maintenance: Performing basic maintenance, such as oiling, cleaning the machine after use, and replacing needles and worn parts as needed.
Production and Quality Control
- Following design specifications: Reading and interpreting design instructions, patterns, and samples to ensure accurate stitching and assembly of components.
- Stitching accuracy: Performing stitching operations on leather and non-leather components with maximum accuracy to meet design and quality standards.
- Quality inspection: Monitoring machine operation and examining finished products to detect defects (e.g., broken threads, defective stitching, material flaws) and making necessary repairs or adjustments.
- Material preparation: Applying pre-stitching techniques like skiving (reducing thickness), folding, or gluing components before stitching.
- Optimizing materials: Arranging and positioning materials on the machine to ensure an efficient workflow and minimize wastage.
Workplace Standards and Documentation
- Maintaining a safe environment: Complying with health, safety, and security protocols in the workplace, and using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Work area organization: Maintaining a clean and organized work area and ensuring tools and equipment are stored properly.
- Documentation and reporting: Filling out production charts, activity logs, and quality control forms, and reporting any problems or risks to supervisors promptly.
Required Skills
Essential skills for this role include:
- Strong manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
- Attention to detail and focus for extended periods.
- Basic problem-solving skills to troubleshoot minor machine issues or defects.
- Ability to work as part of a team and communicate effectively with supervisors.
- Knowledge of different types of leather and non-leather materials, their properties, and appropriate handling techniques.
Course Curriculum Components:
Professional Skills (Trade Practical)
This hands-on component forms the core of the training, covering the practical aspects of leather goods manufacturing.
- Tool and Machine Handling: Safe and effective use of hand tools (awls, knives, punches) and various industrial sewing machines (flat-bed, post-bed, cylinder-bed, zigzag).
- Pattern Making & Cutting: Learning to read and create patterns, mark leather, and accurately cut components to minimize material waste.
- Stitching Techniques: Mastering different types of stitches (hand and machine), advanced techniques like piping and edge stitching, and assembling components for various products (wallets, bags, belts, footwear).
- Finishing Operations: Techniques such as edge burnishing, dyeing, polishing, and embossing to achieve a professional finish.
- Fittings & Accessories: Selection and installation of hardware like zippers, buckles, rivets, and eyelets.
- Quality Control: Conducting visual inspections to identify defects and ensure finished products meet specific quality standards.
- Maintenance & Troubleshooting: Performing basic maintenance on machinery and troubleshooting common operational issues.
Professional Knowledge (Trade Theory)
This theoretical component provides foundational knowledge about materials and processes.
- Introduction to the Leather Industry: Overview of the industry, types of leather, and the manufacturing and tanning processes.
- Material Science: Understanding the properties of different types of natural and synthetic leathers, threads, adhesives, and other materials.
