Course Overview:

A vocational program that provides comprehensive knowledge of leather processing, product design, and manufacturing. The program typically focuses on developing skills for roles in production, quality control, product design, and sustainable practices within the leather industry.

Course responsibilities:-

  • Production Supervision: Oversee and supervise the leather production line, ensuring efficient processing of raw hides and skins into finished leather products as per specifications.
  • Process Management: Manage the various stages of leather manufacture, including pre-tanning, tanning, post-tanning (dyeing and finishing), and implement cleaner, more eco-friendly processing options.
  • Quality Control and Testing: Conduct physical and chemical testing of leather to ensure it meets industry standards and customer expectations for properties like thickness, softness, texture, color, and durability.
  • Product Development: Collaborate with designers to transform design ideas into prototypes. This involves selecting appropriate materials and components, creating technical specifications, and managing the sample-making procedure to create new products like footwear, bags, or garments.
  • Material Sourcing: Source and select appropriate leather materials, substitutes, and chemical components, considering their properties, advantages, and limitations for specific products.
  • Technical Problem Solving: Troubleshoot issues that arise during the manufacturing process and collaborate with the quality assurance (QA) team to find technical solutions at the sampling and bulk production stages.
  • Waste Management and Safety: Ensure that all production processes comply with environmental standards and occupational health and safety regulations, including managing tannery waste and implementing pollution control measures.
  • Machinery Operation and Maintenance: Identify, operate, and maintain various machines and equipment used in leather production and manufacturing.
  • Costing and Management: Apply management principles, calculate production costs (including material and labor), and manage projects effectively within a team environment.
  • Communication: Communicate effectively with cross-functional teams, suppliers, and clients, which may involve discussing commercial and technical issues in different languages

 Course Curriculum Components:

  • Basic Sciences & Engineering: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry (specifically organic and leather chemistry), and basic engineering principles are foundational for understanding the processes involved.
  • Computer Skills: Includes basic IT skills and computer-aided design (CAD/CAM) for pattern making, grading, and design illustration.
  • Communication & Management: Business communication, project management, and entrepreneurship skills are often included to prepare graduates for industry roles.
  • Safety & Environment: Emphasis is placed on occupational health, hygiene, industrial safety, and environmentally friendly practices in leather manufacturing, including waste management and effluent treatment.

Specialized Leather Technology Modules

  • Hides & Skins: Study of the structure, quality, defects, classification, and preservation techniques of various raw materials.
  • Leather Manufacture Processes: Covers the unit operations of pre-tanning (beamhouse operations), tanning, post-tanning, and finishing processes, including the use of various chemicals and machinery.
  • Leather Evaluation: Methods for physical and chemical testing of leather to ensure quality and adherence to specific standards.

Product Development Modules

  • Design & Pattern Making: Principles of design, sketching, and manual/computer-aided pattern creation for various goods like bags, wallets, garments, or footwear.
  • Material & Accessories Knowledge: Identification and selection of appropriate leather types, lining materials, and accessories for specific product requirements.
  • Manufacturing Operations: Hands-on training in cutting, skiving, folding, gluing, and sewing operations using specialized machines and hand tools.
  • Quality Control & Costing: Understanding quality standards, defect analysis, and calculating production costs, including material wastage and labor.
  • On-the-Job Training/Projects: Many programs incorporate mandatory industrial training or major projects to provide real-world experience.
  •  Job opportunities: Job opportunities in the fashion, automotive, and footwear industries, with roles spanning product development, production management, and quality control
