Course Overview:
These programs combine theoretical knowledge with hands-on training in areas like pipe installation, system design, and safety, preparing you for the workforce more quickly than a traditional diploma.
Course responsibilities:-
Core responsibilities
- Installation: Setting up pipes, fixtures (sinks, toilets), and appliances (water heaters) for residential, commercial, and industrial use.
- Maintenance and repair: Fixing leaks, unclogging drains, and servicing heating and cooling systems to ensure they are functioning correctly.
- System inspection: Conducting routine inspections and leak tests on plumbing systems to identify potential problems.
- Blueprint interpretation: Reading and interpreting blueprints to plan and execute the layout of pipe systems.
- Code compliance: Ensuring all work adheres to local building codes, safety regulations, and standards.
- Troubleshooting: Diagnosing and resolving issues like blockages, pressure problems, and malfunctions in various systems, including gas and steam lines.
- Cost estimation: Providing clients with estimates and quotes for repair and installation jobs.
Additional duties
- Appliance installation: Installing and connecting various plumbing fixtures and appliances, including dishwashers and washing machines.
- System design: Assisting in the design and planning of new or renovated piping systems.
- Emergency response: Responding to plumbing emergencies such as floods and burst pipes.
- Material knowledge: Understanding the properties and best uses of different plumbing materials, such as PVC, copper, and PEX
Course Curriculum Components:
The specific modules may vary slightly by institution, but generally, the curriculum covers the following key areas:
- Safety and Health Practices: Understanding workplace safety, identifying hazards and risks, using personal protective equipment (PPE), basic first aid, and fire safety procedures.
- Tools and Materials: Identification, safe use, and maintenance of various plumbing tools (wrenches, cutters, testing equipment), as well as the properties, features, and applications of different pipe materials (PVC, copper, cast iron, etc.).
- Plumbing Principles and Design: Basic fluid dynamics principles like water pressure and flow rates, capillary action, and thermal expansion. Students also learn to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, and plumbing symbols.
- Water Supply Systems: Planning, installation, and maintenance of potable and non-potable water systems, including pumps, storage tanks, fixtures (taps, valves, water meters), and methods to prevent contamination.
- Drainage and Wastewater Systems: Principles of wastewater disposal, the function of traps and vent pipes, installation of sewage and stormwater drainage, and construction of septic tanks, inspection chambers, and manholes.
- Installation and Repair Techniques: Practical skills in cutting, threading, bending, and joining pipes using various methods (welding, soldering, adhesives). This also covers troubleshooting, leak detection, and repairing/replacing damaged components.

- Employability Skills: Communication, self-management, basic IT literacy, and entrepreneurial skills.
- Workshop Calculation and Science: Applied mathematics, measurements, and basic engineering principles relevant to the job.

- On-the-Job Training/Projects: Mandatory practical experience through field visits or projects to work in real-world scenarios.
