Course Overview:

           Nursing assistants work under the supervision of healthcare staff to provide primary medical care to patients. They are responsible for providing patients with preventive, therapeutic and emergency nursing care. If you are interested in pursuing a Career as a nursing assistant, researching their roles and responsibilities can help you make informed career decisions.

 

Course responsibilities:-

  • Personal care: Assist patients with bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting. 
  • Mobility: Help patients walk and transfer between beds, wheelchairs, and chairs, and reposition those who are bedridden to prevent bedsores. 
  • Monitoring and reporting: Take and record vital signs, such as blood pressure, temperature, and pulse, and report any changes to the nursing staff or doctor. 
  • Nutrition: Assist with feeding and ensure patients are meeting their hydration and dietary needs. 
  • Environmental care: Keep patient rooms and common areas clean and sanitized, change bedding, and ensure a safe environment. 
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate records of patient care activities, intake, and output. 
  • Emotional support: Provide companionship and emotional support to patients and their families

Foundational knowledge:

    • Anatomy and physiology
    • Medical terminology
    • Infection control and safety
    • Nutrition and dietetics
    • Principles of nursing

Patient care skills:

    • Assisting with personal hygiene and daily care
    • Monitoring vital signs
    • First aid and emergency response, including CPR
    • Patient lifting, transferring, and mobility assistance
    • Handling medical equipment

  • Patient rights and communication
  • Professional ethics and legal aspects
  • Psychology and empathy in nursing
  • Interpersonal skills for interacting with patients and families

Practical and clinical experience:

  • Hands-on training in simulated or clinical settings
  • Externships or clinical practicum’s in nursing homes or hospitals
  • Waste management and sanitation procedures
