Course Overview:

A fitter is a skilled tradesperson who assembles, installs, and repairs mechanical equipment and machinery according to blueprints. Their job involves fabricating, cutting, and fitting parts, using tools and equipment like grinders, hand files, and welding gear. Fitters also perform routine maintenance and inspections to ensure everything is aligned, functional, and meets safety standards.

Course responsibilities:-

  • Assembly and installation: Assemble, fit, and install mechanical components, machinery, and equipment according to technical specifications and blueprints.
  • Maintenance and repair: Perform routine maintenance, including lubrication and cleaning, and respond to emergency breakdowns to diagnose and repair faults.
  • Technical interpretation: Read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and blueprints to understand project plans and guide installation and repair work.
  • Tool and equipment operation: Operate and maintain specialized tools, hand tools, and power tools for tasks like cutting, shaping, and fitting materials.
  • Safety compliance: Adhere strictly to safety standards, protocols, and work-site regulations to prevent accidents.
  • Troubleshooting: Diagnose problems with mechanical systems, identify the root cause of malfunctions, and implement effective solutions.
  • Record keeping: Maintain accurate records of all maintenance, repair activities, and inspections.

Additional duties

  • Overhauling: Recondition or overhaul older machines to extend their working life.
  • Teamwork: Collaborate with engineers, technicians, and other crew members to solve mechanical issues and ensure efficient workflow.
  • Inspection: Inspect and test equipment after repair to ensure it is functioning correctly
  •

Course Curriculum Components:

The core components provide foundational knowledge applicable across various engineering trades.

  • Engineering Drawing: Reading, interpreting, and creating technical drawings, blueprints, and sketches, including lines, geometric constructions, and orthographic projections.
  • Workshop Calculation & Science: Applying basic mathematical concepts (fractions, decimals, trigonometry, mensuration) and scientific principles (material properties, heat, temperature, basic electricity) to practical operations.
  • Employability Skills: Developing essential soft skills such as communication, teamwork, personal finance, entrepreneurship, productivity, quality control, and basic computer knowledge.
  • Health and Safety: Understanding and applying occupational safety and health (OSHE) practices, accident prevention, proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and fire safety procedures (e.g., 5S concept, first aid).

Domain/Trade-Specific Components

The domain area focuses on developing professional skills through trade theory and practical workshop sessions. Key modules include:

  • Bench Work and Fitting Operations:
    • Hand Tools: Identifying, using, and maintaining various hand tools like files, hacksaws, chisels, hammers, and spanners.
    • Measuring & Marking: Techniques for marking out, using precision instruments (steel rule, calipers, micrometers, gauges, dial indicators), and checking for dimensional accuracy and tolerances.
    • Basic Operations: Performing fundamental tasks such as sawing, filing, chipping, grinding, drilling, reaming, tapping, and scraping to produce components to specifications.
  • Machine Operations: Introduction to and operation of various machines, including drilling machines, power saws, lathes (basic turning, facing, threading), and grinders.
  • Assembly and Maintenance:
    • Joining Methods: Learning methods like riveting, soldering, brazing, and basic arc/gas welding.
    • Mechanical Assembly: Fitting and assembling parts to close tolerances, including power transmission components like pulleys, gears, keys, and shafts.
    • Maintenance: Performing preventive and breakdown maintenance, fault diagnosis, and overhauling simple machines, pumps, and gearboxes.
  • Specialized Systems (depending on the specific program):
    • Pneumatics and Hydraulics: Identifying, dismantling, replacing, and assembling components like compressors, valves, and actuators, and constructing basic circuits.
    • Pipe Fitting: Lying, repairing, and maintaining pipes for various media (water, gas, oil).
    • Material Science: Understanding properties of ferrous and non-ferrous metals and various heat treatment processes like annealing, hardening, and tempering.
  • On-the-Job Training (OJT): Mandatory practical experience in an industrial setting to apply learned skills in a real-world environment.

Upon successful completion, trainees are typically awarded a National Trade Certificate (NTC), recognized globally

  • Job opportunities: Mechanical Fitter, Technician, Service Engineer, and Machine Operator across industries like manufacturing, engineering, and maintenance. Some graduates may also pursue roles as trainers or apprentices in their specific field.
