Course Overview:
The role of a sewing machine operator is very critical to the industry as it enhances the quality of the product. A Sewing Machine Operator, also called a 'Stitcher or Machinist' is an important job-role associated with Apparel sector
Course Responsibilities:-
- Machine operation and maintenance: Operate industrial or specialized sewing machines for mass production or custom work, and perform regular cleaning and basic maintenance to keep them in good working order.
- Garment and product assembly: Stitch fabric components together according to specifications to create finished products like clothing, upholstery, or medical devices.
- Quality control: Inspect finished products to ensure they meet company quality standards and specifications, and identify and report any defects.
- Material and process management: Work with materials efficiently to minimize waste, and follow safety and organizational procedures to maintain a hazard-free work area.
- Troubleshooting and efficiency: Troubleshoot production issues as they arise and implement improvements in sewing techniques and processes to increase efficiency and reduce waste.
Course Curriculum components:
- Introduction to Sewing Machines: Learning about the different types of industrial sewing machines (e.g., single needle lock stitch, overlock, flatlock) and the functions of their parts.
- Machine Operation: Practical training on threading, bobbin winding, adjusting tension, speed control, changing needles, and performing test sews.
- Stitching Techniques: Mastering various stitching methods, including straight lines, curves, corners, seams (plain, top-stitched, self-enclosed), hems, darts, pleats, tucks, gathers, and frills.
- Garment Component Assembly: Learning to assemble specific parts of a garment such as collars, cuffs, sleeves, necklines, waistbands, and pockets.
- Fabric Knowledge: Understanding different fabric types, their properties, handling methods, and selecting the appropriate needles and threads for each.
- Use of Sewing Aids: Training on various presser feet, folders, guides, and attachments to enhance efficiency and quality.
Maintenance and Quality Control
- Machine Maintenance and Troubleshooting: Routine cleaning, oiling, and performing minor maintenance within one's responsibility. This also includes identifying and fixing common issues like thread breakage or uneven stitches.
- Quality Control: Learning to perform quality checks at specified stages, identify defects in materials or stitching, make prompt adjustments, and rework modifiable defects to meet company standards and specifications.
- Material Handling: Proper handling of materials, machinery, equipment, and tools to minimize waste and prevent damage.
Workplace Skills (Employability Skills)
- Health and Safety: Complying with health and safety instructions, using personal protective equipment (PPE), handling waste safely, and understanding fire and electric shock risks associated with the workplace.
- Workplace Ethics and Communication: Developing effective communication skills, teamwork, time management, punctuality, and understanding the job card/work ticket instructions.
- On-the-Job Training: Many programs include a mandatory period of industrial training to provide real-world factory experience.
