Course Overview:

The primary goal is to equip trainees with the technical knowledge and practical skills required to accurately cut fabrics for mass production in a factory setting or for custom tailoring

  • Ensuring precision and accuracy in cutting to minimize fabric wastage.
  • Understanding and implementing quality control standards.
  • Operating and maintaining various types of cutting machines and tools.
  • Interpreting production specifications and work orders.

Course Responsibilities:-

  • Fabric Preparation: Preparing fabric for cutting by spreading it in multiple layers on a large table, smoothing out creases, and allowing it to relax (if required by the fabric type) to prevent shrinkage issues later.
  • Pattern Placement and Marking: Laying patterns on the fabric according to design specifications and production markers (which are often computer-generated using CAD systems) to maximize material utilization and minimize waste.
  • Cutting Operations: Operating various cutting tools and machinery, which can range from manual scissors and handheld electric knives to advanced Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) or automatic cutting machines, to accurately cut all fabric plies (layers).
  • Quality Control (QC): Performing in-process checks to verify the dimensions, alignment, and quality of cut pieces. This includes inspecting the fabric for defects (stains, holes, shade variations) before and after cutting and ensuring the cuts align with quality standards.
  • Sorting and Bundling: Organizing the cut components by size, color, and style into manageable bundles to ensure a smooth flow to the sewing department and to prevent mix-ups.
  • Numbering: Applying unique numbers to each layer within a bundle using stickers or stamping to maintain traceability throughout the production process.
  • Machine Maintenance: Performing routine maintenance, cleaning, and minor troubleshooting of cutting equipment (e.g., sharpening blades) and reporting major malfunctions to the maintenance team.
  • Safety and Compliance: Adhering strictly to health and safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and proper handling of sharp tools and machinery, to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintaining accurate records of fabric usage, cut quantities, and production data, and reporting this information to supervisors or the planning department.
  • Collaboration: Working closely with pattern makers, designers, and sewing line supervisors to resolve any technical issues and ensure the cut pieces meet the specific requirements for assembly.

 Course Curriculum components:

  • Fabric and Material Knowledge: Understanding different types of fabrics, their properties (e.g., shrinkage, grain, selvedge), and how to handle them to prevent damage, contamination, or waste.
  • Measurement and Sizing: Learning to take accurate body measurements, use measuring tools, and record dimensions for creating well-fitted garments.
  • Pattern Making and Layout:
    • Identifying and using different types of patterns.
    • Drafting paper patterns for various garments (e.g., ladies' wear, kid's wear, gents' wear).
    • Efficiently arranging and nesting patterns on fabric (marker planning) to maximize material utilization and minimize fabric waste.
    • Transferring pattern outlines onto the material with precision (pattern marking).
  • Cutting Techniques and Machinery:
    • Operating various cutting tools and equipment, including manual scissors/shears, rotary cutters, and different types of industrial cutting machines (e.g., die cutting, laser cutting, computer-controlled cutting machines).
    • Learning various cutting methods, cutting speeds, and handling techniques for accuracy and consistency.
    • Troubleshooting and correcting errors in pattern layout and cutting.
  • Sorting and Bundling: Organizing cut garment components by size, style, and color, and preparing them for transport to the sewing department.

Quality Control and Finishing

  • Quality Inspection: Checking cut pieces for accuracy, defects (e.g., jagged edges, pattern misalignment), and alignment.
  • Stain Removal: Knowledge of different stains and the equipment and methods for removing them from fabrics/garments.
  • Pressing and Finishing: Correct methods of pressing different garments according to fabric type and proper folding/packing techniques.
  • Minor Alterations and Repair: Basic skills in mending minor errors or damages, such as darning and patching.

Workplace and Professional Skills

  • Health, Safety, and Security: Understanding and applying safe working practices, identifying potential hazards, using personal protective equipment (PPE), and knowing basic first aid and fire safety procedures.
  • Machine Maintenance: Basic knowledge of machine parts, functions, minor adjustments, care, and maintenance of cutting and related machines.
  • Employability Skills: Training often includes general workplace skills like basic communication, teamwork, time management, and documentation/report preparation.
  • On-the-Job Training (OJT): Many diploma or certificate programs include a mandatory practical training component in an actual industry setting to develop real-world competency

Job opportunities:

  •  Large garment manufacturing factories
  • Export houses and trading houses
  • Fashion designers' studios and small design studios
  • Tailoring and alteration shops
  • Textile mills and apparel brands
